Vote Cheyenne Sims for Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees Seat #1
Dearr Community,
David needed only a well-placed stone and an improbable aim at the forehead to topple Goliath. Against all odds, David triumphed, his faith in humanity fortified by his belief in God. This story resonates with me as it mirrors my own educational journey. I persisted through challenges at West Los Angeles College, one of the nine LACCD colleges, despite periods of hunger, lack of stable housing, and wavering focus. There, I laid the groundwork for my passion for education and advocacy. I overcame every structural barrier and continued my education at Howard University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies.
I am a proud South Central Los Angeles native, mom, and advocate dedicated to amplifying the voices of those often unheard. I have a background in grassroots organizing advocating for racial justice, social, economic and educational equity.
As a board member of my Neighborhood Council, I championed youth employment, services for the elderly, literacy programs and resilience within the community. My work resulted in employment access for underserved youth, affordable housing for the elderly, and free literacy programs across our community. Most recently, I founded HBCU Route, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating pathways for Black students in Los Angeles to attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Through HBCU Route, I provide essential college prep and resources to help students achieve their academic and professional goals.
My unwavering dedication to social justice and community empowerment drives my ongoing efforts to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those I serve. I am committed to bringing you to the table and informing you about the services, funds, and opportunities that LACCD has to offer. I would be honored to earn your support to ensure our scholars have an advocate on the board of trustees. Please fill out our volunteer form to get involved.
Sincerely,
Cheyenne Sims
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- South Central LA native, Cheyenne Sims, Is running for Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Board of Trustees Seat #1. The only Black candidate in an at-large voting system where low-income people and people of color's vote is diluted by the affluent establishment, Sims is a graduate from Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies and associate's degree from West Los Angeles College, one of the Nine LACCD Colleges. Ms. Sims candidacy comes amid several sexual harassment lawsuits against the LACCD and a vote of No Confidence by the District Academic Senate, who represents over 4,000 faculty. The Academic Senate cites a series of sexual harassment lawsuits and corruption allegations. In one lawsuit, a jury awarded a Southwest LA Professor over $10 million for a pattern of sexual harassment by an administrator. The Academic Senate points to a $127 million contract tainted by irregularities– including being vetted by the administrator responsible for the sexual harassment jury verdict. “David needed only a well-placed stone and an improbable aim at the forehead to topple Goliath. Against all odds, David triumphed, his faith in humanity fortified by his belief in God. This story resonates with the battle against the encroached establishment– who rely on an at-large discriminatory district whereby candidates have to do outreach to at least 2.7 million voters, rather than by district, as the Los Angeles School Board does it, or the LA City Council. The system is designed to keep honest, hardworking, and grassroots candidates from getting elected. We have faith. And we will win. We need you to, in the word of First Lady Michelle Obama, ‘Do Something!’" Please Visit www.cheyenne4laccd.com to learn about the problem, the solution, to make a donation and get involved.
